Single Side Printed Flex Circuits are obviously Printed Flexible Circuits consisting of a single conductive layer of metal or conductive polymer (filled with metal) in a flexible dielectric film. Component termination features are, by definition, accessible only on one side, but the holes in the base film to allow the components to pass through the components are an obvious requirement. Single Face Printed Flex Circuits can be manufactured with or without such protective coatings as the cover layer. However, the use of protective coating is the most common practice.
Flexible dual-access, also known as rear push-ups, are Flex Printed Circuit with a single conductive layer, but are processed to allow access to selected characteristics of the driver’s pattern on both sides. An example of such a resource would be a lead term. Although this type of Flex Printed Circuit offers several apparent benefits, it is not as commonly manufactured as the Flex One-sided Flex Printed Circuit. This is because the special processing required to provide discrete access to resources, although laser technology is certainly well applied to the task. The Flexible Printed Circuit Board with three or more layers of conductors is known as a Multilayer Flexible Printed Circuit Board. Commonly, the layers are interconnected by through-holes, although this is not the definition requirement, as it is possible to provide aperture to access low-level circuit features.
Layers of the Flexible Multilayer Printed Circuit Board may or may not be continuously laminated together throughout the construction, with the obvious exception of the area occupied by plated through holes. The practice of discontinuous lamination is common in cases where maximum flexibility is required. This is achieved by leaving the non-flexed areas where flexing and flexing should occur.
